As headline partner of the Auto Express New Car Awards 2015, Warrantywise had a front row seat this week for what looks like the resurgence of one of Europe’s most established, but recently forgotten, premium brands.
The UK’s biggest weekly motoring publication decided that its Car of the Year 2015 should be awarded to Volvo, and the new XC90. Warrantywise CEO Lawrence Whittaker was on hand to present Volvo with their award, representing the first time for a while that the Swedish manufacturer has triumphed over its rivals.
So what’s changed? Not too long ago Volvo was bought by Chinese manufacturer, Geely, and the incredible investment has seen new platforms, new engines and new technology – all of which combined in the XC90 to produce a car that is cheap to run, extremely clever and looks brilliant, too.
But this is just the beginning, and a quick look down the list of other winners reveals Volvo is obviously absent. Best Estate Car – a category Volvo best represents? That will be the Volkswagen Passat. Compact family car? The Volvo V40 doesn’t get a look in, with the SEAT Leon taking the honours.

Over the next five years, Volvo will be introducing saloons, estates, small SUVs and possibly even a sporty coupé, all boasting the same kind of technology, luxury and design as the XC90. A manufacturer once dismissed as an outsider looks like it’ll begin to challenge the mainstream once again – and that can only be a good thing.
Here at Warrantywise, we’ve got a feeling this won’t be the last award we’re handing over to Volvo in the next few years.
