Ford has built a trusty status over the years, making them a very popular choice in the motoring world. The Ford Focus was the fourth most-sold car in the UK in 2023, with a total of 223,417 sales [1]. It narrowly missed out on a spot in the top 3 and was pipped to the post by the Volkswagen Golf with 227,427 transactions under its belt.

To offer motorists some real insight into the Ford Focus’ reliability, we’ve scored it against our Reliability Index criteria. The Focus scored a reasonable 59 out of 100, which is slightly lower than some of the other vehicles on the list, but what does that entail?

What does our data say?

Our data reveals that the most regular Ford Focus repair request is for the clutch. Any issues with the clutch can be dangerous and potentially costly. Warning signs include poor acceleration, struggling to change gear, and a squeaking pedal. To maintain your clutch you should avoid riding it by ensuring you don’t rest your foot on the clutch pedal when it’s not in use. Shifting gears smoothly will also help. Always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for maintenance to ensure it is inspected regularly by a professional mechanic.

What is the average age of the Ford Focus when a fault occurs?

The index data also tells us that the average age of the Focus at the time of requested repairs is 8 years. This is the highest age in the list of most popular used cars. Whilst this is a good indicator of reliability, it is important to note that mechanical and electrical faults can occur at any time.

What is the average mileage of the Ford Focus when a fault occurs?

When it comes to your car’s health, it’s important to keep an eye on the mileage. At the time of your requested repairs, the Focus had an average mileage of 72,940 miles. With most used vehicles running efficiently up to 50,000 to 80,000 miles, this is a great sign that your Focus could continue to serve you well for a long time before encountering any major issues. However, if your Focus happens to run into trouble before then, as many cars do, don’t worry! Investing in an extended warranty can provide you with peace of mind and protect your wallet from unexpected repair costs.

What are the running costs for the Ford Focus?

Most Ford Focus’ can achieve an average of 40 to 50 miles per gallon, but this will vary depending on the model and engine size. Insurance-wise, most Ford Focus models sit between groups 10 and 15, which is slightly higher than other cars on the list, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the Focus will come with an expensive insurance premium. For a used Ford Focus, starting prices range from £3,500 to £4,000 – not bad for a car with such a reliable reputation.

However, no vehicle is perfect. The index data found that the average repair request for a Ford Focus costs £1,158, and the highest Focus repair request we’ve received is £12,459! These average repair costs are higher than some of the other popular used cars in the list, so you might want to consider how you are going to budget effectively for when something goes wrong

Is the Ford Focus practical?

In terms of practicality, the Focus leaves few with complaints. Space is ample in the front and rear, so you’re unlikely to have problems with leg or head room. If you’re buying the Focus as a family car, children will be very comfortable, but you may have a little bother squeezing bulky pushchairs into the boot – there’s plenty of room for a small carry on cases or a weekly shop though. The Ford Focus also has a range of estate options which offer more interior and boot space, so whatever your needs, it’s likely there’s a Focus model that suits you.

Warrantywise Reliability Index Scoring and Data: Rank is measured by repair request frequency, average vehicle age at the time of fault, average mileage and average labour time, from 1 January 2020 to 30 September 2023, and includes vehicles between three and ten years old where there are a minimum of 250 cars on cover. Average repair costs collated over a period between 1 January 2020 and 30 September 2023.
