Choosing a van for work involves more than purchase price, payload and running costs. Reliability also matters when a vehicle is relied on for jobs, deliveries, day-to-day business operations or even if you use a van as your daily ‘car’.

Warrantywise’s Van Reliability Index, draws on more than 430,000 individual data points and shows that age and mileage don’t tell the whole reliability story when it comes to vans. Some older and higher-mileage models still achieve strong scores on Warrantywise’s Reliability Index.

Read on to discover which models make the top five most reliable used vans for 2026, what the data tells us about age and mileage when it comes to the need for repairs, and more about what to consider when choosing a used van.

What are the five most reliable used vans in 2026, according to Warrantywise’s repair data?

The Top 5 most reliable used vans 2026.

Rank Vehicle Score
1 Fiat Doblo 68.2
2 Renault Kangoo 66.2
3 Citroën Berlingo 64.2
4 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 58.4
5 Volkswagen Caddy 56.9

A higher Reliability Index score indicates a lower relative repair risk within the vehicles analysed. It doesn’t mean a van will never need repairing, as servicing, maintenance, mileage, previous use and vehicle history can all influence reliability.

What are the most common repair trends for used vans?

Emissions failure was the most regular repair request area for three of the five highest-scoring vans in the Warrantywise Reliability Index.

The trend appears across the Renault Kangoo, Citroën Berlingo and Mercedes Sprinter, showing that emissions-related issues feature prominently in the repair data even among some of the strongest-performing vans in the Index.

The most regular repair request area for the Fiat Doblo was its turbocharger, while fuel system issues were most regular for the Volkswagen Caddy.

These findings show that repair trends can vary between van models, although emissions failure stands out as the most consistent theme across the top five.

Why does this matter for diesel van drivers?

Emissions-related issues are particularly relevant for van drivers and businesses because diesel vehicles rely on systems designed to control harmful exhaust emissions. These include diesel particulate filters (DPFs), selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems and AdBlue.

This is particularly significant given the continued importance of diesel in the UK van market. According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, diesel accounted for 82.3% of new light commercial vehicle registrations under 3.5 tonnes in the first eight months of 2026, compared with 9.9% for battery-electric vans.

For drivers and businesses operating diesel vans, emissions-control systems therefore remain an important part of vehicle maintenance and may require repair during ownership.

What do van drivers need to know about diesel emissions systems?

Emissions systems are receiving increased regulatory attention. In 2026, the Department for Transport consulted on proposals to strengthen the rules around emissions from vehicles already in use, with the aim of ensuring they continue to meet the legal emissions requirements that applied when they were first registered.

The consultation specifically considers practices involving the manipulation or removal of emissions-control systems, including DPFs, AdBlue and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems.

How much do used van repairs cost?

Among the five highest-scoring vans in the Warrantywise Reliability Index, the average repair request value ranged from £530 for the Renault Kangoo to £1,728 for the Mercedes Sprinter.

The figures show why repair frequency and repair cost need to be considered separately when looking at reliability. The Mercedes Sprinter ranked fourth overall despite having the highest average repair request value among the top 5, demonstrating that a strong overall Reliability Index score doesn’t necessarily mean repairs will be less expensive.

Reliability isn’t only about how often repairs are needed. The potential cost of a repair can also matter for businesses that depend on their vans, particularly when unexpected work needs to be factored into day-to-day operating costs.

What does the Index tell us about the general reliability of used vans?

One of the clearest findings is that age and mileage don’t tell the whole reliability story.

If we look at the Top 5 again with some added age and mileage data…

Rank/Vehicle Overall Reliability Score Average age at repair Average mileage at repair
1. Fiat Doblo 68.2 8.7 years 74,762
2. Renault Kangoo 66.2 8.4 years 84,901
3. Citroën Berlingo 64.2 6.9 years 74,166
4. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 58.4 6.0 years 98,421
5. Volkswagen Caddy 56.9 9.1 years 83,233

The Fiat Doblo recorded the highest overall score despite an average age of 8.7 years when repairs were requested. The Volkswagen Caddy had an average age of 9.1 years, while the fourth-placed Mercedes Sprinter averaged 98,421 miles when repairs were requested.

This doesn’t mean age and mileage aren’t important. How a van has been driven, maintained and serviced throughout its life can all influence its condition and future repair requirements.

Are high mileage vans reliable?

Used-van buyers may look closely at age and mileage, but our data suggests neither should be treated as a reliability score on its own.

Rank/Vehicle Overall Reliability Score Average mileage at repair
1. Fiat Doblo 68.2 74,762
2. Renault Kangoo 66.2 84,901
3. Citroën Berlingo 64.2 74,166
4. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 58.4 98,421
5. Volkswagen Caddy 56.9 83,233

The Mercedes Sprinter, for example, recorded an average mileage of 98,421 when repairs were requested and still ranked fourth in our Reliability Index. For businesses considering a used van, this reinforces the importance of looking at the wider vehicle history, including how it has been maintained and serviced.

Does age affect van reliability?

Age can influence van reliability, but – as with mileage – it should be considered alongside other factors. How a van has been used, serviced and maintained throughout its life can all affect when issues develop.

Rank/Vehicle Overall Reliability Score Average age at repair
1. Fiat Doblo 68.2 8.7 years
2. Renault Kangoo 66.2 8.4 years
3. Citroën Berlingo 64.2 6.9 years
4. Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 58.4 6.0 years
5. Volkswagen Caddy 56.9 9.1 years

The Warrantywise Reliability Index shows that some older vans still achieve strong overall scores. For example, the Fiat Doblo and Renault Kangoo performed strongly despite average vehicle ages of 8.7 and 8.4 years respectively when they needed repairs.

Why is reliability important when choosing a new van?

For many businesses and working van owners, an unexpected breakdown can mean rearranging jobs, finding alternative transport or having a vehicle unavailable while diagnostics and repairs take place.

Choosing a van with a strong reliability profile can be an important part of managing day-to-day disruption and longer-term ownership costs. Reliability is not the only factor to consider, but it can help provide useful context alongside mileage, maintenance history, previous use and overall condition.

What should I check before buying a used van?

Before buying a used van for work, look beyond its age and mileage. Check its service and maintenance history, previous use, general condition and suitability for the work you need it to do.

Factors to consider.

A van with higher mileage and a good maintenance history may sometimes be a better option than a lower-mileage vehicle that has not been looked after consistently.

How can I keep my van on the road?

Regular maintenance and responding to problems early can help reduce the risk of avoidable downtime.

Van maintenance checklist – keeping your van on the road.

  • Check tyres and pressures
  • Check oil/coolant and other fluid levels
  • Respond to dashboard warning lights
  • Keep servicing up to date
  • Record maintenance and repairs
  • Investigate unusual noises or changes in performance
  • Plan for MOT/service dates

No maintenance routine can prevent every problem, but looking after a van consistently can help identify issues earlier and keep it working as reliably as possible.

What should van drivers take from the data?

Reliability and repair data can provide a useful point of comparison when considering the potential running and repair costs of a used van, but reliability is only one part of the picture.

A high reliability score doesn’t mean a van will never develop a problem, while a lower score doesn’t mean every van of that model will experience problems.

A well-maintained van with a comprehensive service history may present a very different ownership proposition from another vehicle of the same model that has had more demanding use or inconsistent maintenance.

How can an extended warranty help van drivers?

An extended van warranty can help owners and businesses manage the cost of unexpected repairs as a vehicle ages or moves beyond the manufacturer’s warranty.

Van reliability FAQs.

The Fiat Doblo has the highest Reliability Index score among the vans analysed, scoring 68.2 out of 100, according to the Warrantywise Reliability Index 2026.

A higher mileage does not automatically mean a van will be unreliable. Our Reliability Index shows that some higher-mileage models still achieved strong overall scores. Maintenance history, previous use, servicing and repair frequency can all influence reliability.

Several factors can influence how reliable a used van is, including its service history, maintenance, mileage, age and previous use. No single factor determines reliability, which is why it’s important to consider the vehicle’s overall condition.

Reliability is only one part of choosing a used van. Check the vehicle’s service and maintenance history, mileage, previous use, overall costs, condition and suitability for the work you need it to do.

Disclaimer.

Models included in the Reliability Index have a minimum of 150 vehicles on plan during the relevant data period. Repair frequency includes recovery and inspections.

Average repair request values include authorised and unauthorised repair requests and reflect the period analysed.

Records without the required repair date, manufacture date, mileage or labour information have been excluded in line with the Reliability Index methodology. Extreme mileage and labour values outside the defined methodology have also been removed.

All data is sourced from Warrantywise’s internal Reliability Index and is believed to be accurate at the time of publication. Historical repair data does not guarantee future vehicle reliability, and Warrantywise may update the information as new Index data becomes available.
